Getting The Right Amount Of Sleep Is Very Important Because

Getting the right amount of sleep is very important; because of sleep loss, many human and environmental health disasters have occurred. Looking back at the past one hundred years, the average amount of sleep that americans obtain, has decreased by twenty percent. There are certain amounts of sleep every age group needs to get through each night. Children six to thirteen years old need 9-11 hours; ages fourteen to seventeen need 8-10 hours; and eighteen to sixty-four year olds need to obtain 7-9 hours of sleep every night. However, commitments to our school or work schedules may restrain us from getting all the sleep we need. Because of this inbuilt sleep mechanism, it is extremely difficult for a person to remain awake for more than 48 hours straight. Although, as part of an experiment in 1965, Randy Gardner stayed awake for 11 days and twenty-four minutes. John J. Ross of the US Navy Medical Neuropsychiatric Research Unit, which was responsible for keeping track of Gardner’s experiment, mentioned that by day three he became moody and uncoordinated. By the fifth day, he started hallucinating. After the eleven days he reported Expressionless appearance, speech slurred and without intonation; had to be encouraged to talk to get him to respond at all. His attention span was very short and his mental abilities were diminished.† It was also mentioned that Randy Gardner was a lucky subject, because not every person would be able to stay awake for so long and finish off with no obvious long-term physical and mental defects. Sleep deprivation shapes normal functioning of attention and disrupts the ability to focus on environmental sensory input. It plays a big role in what was mentioned earlier, tragic accidents. When a person is sleep deprived it is difficult for them to stay focused on one thing and they are constantly zoning out.
